Thivya's Reflection
THROUGH THIS GEOGRAPHICAL INVESTIGATION, I have been able to better understand how social media plays an important part in globalisation and to what extent do Singaporeans view social media as their go to for global news.
Before this investigation, I knew social media was an integral part of an average Singaporean's life but not how much. From this investigation, I have learnt how much social media has embedded itself into our lives.
Personally, I have never considered social media a very reliable source of news. Although social media is a really effective way of spreading information quickly, there is a very high chance of the news getting distorted along the way. I assumed our local newspapers would be the popular choice among Singaporeans. I say this because free newspapers such as TODAY and My Paper are distributed on weekday mornings at MRT stations and bus interchanges.
However, this investigation has been an eye opener for me as I never would have thought that more Singaporeans would consider social media an effect tool to allow them to be aware of news from around the world. It made me think and I realised it was reasonable that Singaporeans would consider social media their go to for global news.
Singapore is a very fast paced country and there is barely time for people to actually read through newspapers. However, these days, with many owning smartphones and having social media accounts, together with more and more global news platforms joining social media, it is definitely more convenient for one to use social media as their go to for news, local or global.
At the end of the day, I feel that the "traditional" methods of spreading news, newspapers for example, would still be preferred over social media as our world spirals towards to a more technologically advanced one.
