Isabel 's Reflection
THROUGH THIS GEOGRAPHICAL INVESTIGATION, I was able to better understand the role social media platforms play in globalization. Going into the investigation, I already had some inkling that social media was an integral part in the 21st century, as it connects people -both friends and strangers- from all around the globe.
However, I had no idea of how extensive the reach of social media platforms was, such that it was even able to spread news from country to country so fast and so accurately that it can even rival local newspapers. Personally I always believed that local newspapers, especially The Straits Times, was an unrivaled source of news as it has prime content. However, it shocked me to find out that as a source of news for events around the world, social media platforms like Facebook -with 11 years of history- was actually almost on par with local newspapers like The Straits Times -a newspaper with 185 years of history. It is shocking how the invention of Internet and social media has so greatly improved the transfer of information and news. In such a relatively short span of time, the Internet and social media were able to accomplish what would have taken a much longer time in the past.
Despite the results in the investigation, I was glad to learn that even as Internet and social media pulled our world closer together, traditional methods of spreading news are still widely used and revered. To me, no matter how vibrant social media platforms are, they will never be able to replace the smell of paper and ink of a newspaper. Personally, I think that even as we progressed further into the future with Internet and social media, we still have to preserve our traditions. It saddens me to think that there might be a day when social media platforms take over the role of local newspapers.
